Originally conceived to improve the standard of highway construction in the UK, the Laboratory quickly branched out into vehicle and pedestrian safety. Fast forward 85 years and SMLL, embedded into the London transport network, is at the heart of the digital agenda revolutionising intelligent transport systems, using big data principles to derive new insights from connected applications.
Every decade has seen new mobility concepts come and go. TRL has investigated all of them. From the Sinclair C5 to the Channel Tunnel, electric trains to Hyperloop, bendy buses to e-scooters, milk floats to driverless drones. The point isn’t that we’ve seen it all before, its that we really do know how to assess and monitor these ideas for safety, accessibility, and environmental impact.
Don’t expect a whitewash. Progress thrives on transparency and respectfully telling it as it is. SMLL is a TRL company, owned by the Transport Research Foundation: a non profit distributing company that enables our experts to give independent advice without influence from shareholders or finance companies.
