Driver Behaviour at Protected Level Crossings

Collisions between vehicles and trains at protected level crossings are declining, however it is not clear if Network Rail can meet their zero collisions target. Here, Robert Lee explores reasons for this. He also finds a lack of research to explain the decision-making processes which motivate drivers to ignore warnings. It's time to take a new look at the design of level crossings, with greater consideration of human risk-taking behaviour.
