Ethics of Automated Vehicles: Breaking Traffic Rules for Road Safety

Congratulations to Nick Reed on the recent publication of his paper on the ethics of rule breaking for automated vehicles in Springer Nature Digital Ethics and Information Technology.

The special collection invited reflections on the 20 recommendations from an expert group to the European Commission on ethics of connected and automated vehicles, published in Sep 2020. The paper explores responses to Law Commission of England and Wales's consultation on automated vehicles with regard to potential rule-breaking and highlights the challenges for AI based systems in deriving and applying reasoning in complex, safety-critical environments.
