Following debate in the industry about the definitions of Levels of Driving Automation, the Society of Automotive Engineers has updated its J3016. This is a helpful mechanism to keep all parties using consistent terminology. Recent EC legislation will allow the sale of Level 2 and Level 3 features in new cars this year. There is an important distinction between Level 2 and Level 3, based on the role of the driver in the vehicle.

Further details of the update and the rationale behind it can be read in the SAE press release here.
