Remote Operation of CAVs – the need for definition

In this short article, Arun Kalaiyarasan, Safety Researcher at TRL, outlines the challenges and the need for consistent terminology, and proposes a set of definitions for the classification of remote operation activities in CAV trials.

This is a follow-on article to one written at the start of research on this topic 9 months ago.

Following stakeholder engagement, TRL have assessed the current proposed definitions for “remote control” of automated vehicles. Agreeing with some, disagreeing with others, Arun proposes a simplified approach to the definitions.

Terminology and definitions are a key part of standards development for new technologies, so industry consensus is very helpful.
